Pop culture turning into pop art

Hello lovely readers welcome back to my blog. I hope you all are doing well and I appreciate you coming back and reading about this fun topic that I’m discussing today. Today I am writing about pop culture and art but a show that many of us know and that is “The Simpsons”!

It is one of my favorite shows and it is a show that Springfield holds dear to our hearts. It is said that it is based on our town since Matt Goering lived in Portland. While driving around Springfield you will find many murals and other street art done in Springfield.

There was one famous piece done was in the summer of 2014 on Main St. in Springfield Oregon. That street is known for its murals there are so many wonderful murals done on that strip of road. This has to be one of my most favorites though because I do have quite a liking for “The Simpsons”.

For the unveiling of the mural the city hired the artists to do the mural in the first place which I think is wonderful but they brought in Yeardley Smith which is so much fun for us. She plays the voice of Lisa Simpsons in the show and they also had a cartoon character which was quite large and there were many kids who loved taking pictures with the mascot.

This was such a large event and hundreds came to support these artists that created this mural. It was being called a block party because so many people came to celebrate this unveiling. What I find amazing is that the “Washington Post” wrote about this on their paper. They wrote about how Smith came and did her foot prints and hand prints under the mural to celebrate this.

Even though it is still not official that the Springfield in “The Simpsons” is the Springfield here in Oregon but we can still claim it as our own and if you watch it there are some hints that they are one and the same. Many of the names and locations used in the show are things that are located here in Springfield. One major thing is Principal Skinner who could be named about Skinner’s Butte in Eugene.

What I really love about this street art and other art around town that has to do with “The Simpsons” is that it is the show coming alive even more so. In another blog there was this quote that I found that I was absolutely amazed by. “With the advent of pop art, trends and fashions become subsumed into an all-encompassing phenomena that seeks to merge the whole cultural endeavor into a singular aesthetic style (History of Pop Art, Anthony Morley, 2021).” The reason that this sentence stood out to me was that the writer mentioned the word “merge”. Pop culture and art often merge together and is able to make it seem more realistic for the viewers. It makes them one where you can enjoy art and the pop culture of whatever it is at the same time and the time the artists put into each work.

That is it for this post thank you all for reading this post and I hope you all had as much fun reading it as I did writing it! The video below is a link to the days leading up to the reveal of the mural which I found incredible. As always stay safe, stay colorful, and go enjoy some beautiful art!
